Villa di Piazzano
C.S. 7 Piazzano 06069
Tuoro sul Trasimeno
Tuscany

The Hotel Villa di Piazzano is a manor house of the 1400s located in the countryside just outside the town of Cortona, a town on the border between Tuscany and Umbria made famous by the American writer Frances Mayes with her book and later the movie, Under the Tuscan Sun

The Villa was acquired some years ago by an Italian-Australian family with a tradition in hotels, the Wimpole family, which carefully transformed the Villa into an exclusive hotel, with that warm and intimate atmosphere that only a family run property can provide.

The Villa is surrounded by a garden of 1 hectare, with a beautiful formal Italian garden, a spectacular entrance with a cypress lined driveway, a large swimming pool and private parking for guests.  The menu of the restaurant changes with the seasons and offers dishes which are traditional of this region, based on local and genuine products.   The hotel also has a bar facility which is transferred under the shaded terrace in the summer months.

The building is characterized by a linear architecture typical of the late 1400s which is when the first portion of the Villa was built.  The foundation stone, dating back to 1464, is located in the lobby area with the date inscribed in roman numerals.   Further work was carried out in 1693 and 1694.

Initially it was the hunting manor of Cardinal Silvio Passerini (1469-1529), who died under mysterious circumstances and was buried in Rome.  At the time, Cardinal Silvio Passerini was the treasurer of the Vatican, bishop of Cortona and very influential due to the protection offered to him by the Medici family.  The estate later became a convent and in the last century a farming estate with vineyards and tobacco plantations.   The restoration of the building commenced in 1999 and lasted 2 years.

The Wimpole family was particularly careful in preserving the beauty and authenticity of the original building.  Today the Villa is classified as an Historical Residence and offers a warm and elegant atmosphere for the discerning traveller. The rooms are all in perfect harmony with a noble residence, whilst having all the modern comforts, including air-conditioning.

The windows open onto magnificent views of the surrounding hills, fields which change colour with every season and a lush garden unleashing pleasant scents all year round.

A stay at the Villa di Piazzano is an experience which stimulates all of the five senses, from the sight of the beautiful Tuscan countryside to the tranquillity interrupted only by the singing of birds.

The garden which surrounds the ancient residence is not only an oasis of peace, but a beautiful ancient park which is protected by the Environmental Authorities because of its beauty and historic importance.  Silence reigns interrupted only by the sounds of birds and nature.

The intense scents of linden trees, Italian oaks and jasmine, as well as those of wild roses, lavender and peonies sweeten the days of guests laying by the pool or under the shade of the century old oaks.

Far away from the chaos of the city the body and soul regenerate opening themselves to sensations which seem to have been forgotten.
