Restoration

In 2009, the mansion’s incumbent custodian became world-renowned philanthropist and yachtsman, Peter de Savary. Committed to preserving unique traditions and providing the very best and latest in creature comforts for our discerning guests and members, this one hundred year old Vanderbilt mansion unveils the results of an outstanding restoration.

He has created a sophisticated throwback a modern hotel could never emulate.

He has restored and created some of the world’s finest destinations and clubs including, amongst many others, Skibo Castle in Scotland, Stapleford Park in England, The Abaco Club in the Bahamas and Cherokee Plantation and the St James Clubs internationally. In 2010, Peter de Savary came to Newport Harbor, reinventing The Residences at Brown and Howard Wharf into the Vanderbilt Residences, Newport's most extraordinary harbor-front condominiums.

Today, the interiors of Vanderbilt Hall reflect his eclectic taste as well as boasting one of America’s most impressive private museum art collections currated by world-renowned expert, Judy Cutler of the American Museum of Illustration Art.

Vanderbilt Hall History

Built during the "gilded age" in 1909, the mansion Vanderbilt Hall was commissioned by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt for his glamorous mistress Agnes O'Brien Ruiz, the wife of the Cuban Attache.  His father, Cornelius Vanderbilt II and his uncle, William were responsible for some of the most spectacular summer residences, or "cottages" as Newporters called the mansions. Many including the Vanderbilt residences, The Breakers and Marble House, are open today as museums and designated National Historic Landmarks. The family empire and fortune had been established in shipping and railroad. Upon the death of his lover, Alfred Vanderbilt donated the newly built mansion to the people of Newport. Only a few years later, Alfred himself perished aboard the ill-fated RMS Lusitania and is today remembered around the world as a gallant gentleman and sportsman who died saving the lives of others on board.

His son William Henry III later went on to become Governor of Rhode Island. Vanderbilt Hall overlooks the historic Trinity Church (1725), built entirely of wood and based on designs by Sir Christopher Wren. The church is still the heart of Newport community and was the scene of many films including Amistad and Evening whilst Newport was the setting for The Great Gatsby. Heavily influenced by the Beaux-Arts style, Vanderbilt Hall exhibits many outstanding classical details to its exterior. Vanderbilt Hall's magnificent reception rooms are graced with rare and interesting artworks. The meticulous restoration respects the mansion's remarkable history.

Art Collection

Adorned with Peter de Savary’s unique private museum collection of original American Illustration Art; the interiors of Vanderbilt Hall possess a lively and amusing illustrative commentary of the early 20th Century.
