Palazzo Terranova has received world wide acclaim as one of the finest luxury hotels in Italy. Guests are welcomed to a feast for the eyes, mind and soul at Palazzo Terranova. Views from its hillside perch are of endless mountain ridges interspersed with hidden, seemingly virgin valley -- indescribably beautiful views for nature and serenity lovers. No less remarkable are the riches inside the villa – a collection of world-class art, antiques and books that will intrigue the thirstiest mind and satisfy the most receptive soul. This is truly a one-of-a-kind retreat, perfect for couples as well as for the family or group of friends looking for absolute privacy amid natural and civilized luxury.

With its twenty hectare garden of olive groves, citrus trees, vineyards and pastures of wild flowers, the hotel exists in harmony with its secluded corner of Umbria.  High among the hills and valleys of Umbria, 20 minutes from the town of Cittą di Castello, Cortona, Assisi, and in the centre of Renaissance Italy, guests are welcomed with faultless hospitality.

Palazzo Terranova is a 10-suite hotel. More accurately, though, it is an elegant home and a "spa for the mind." Each of its three mountain-view floors has its own book-filled living room, and the reading selections are indicative of the owner’s wide-ranging international tastes and interests – "Secret Gardens of Napoli", "The Complete Personal Journals of Nicholas and Alexandra", a biography of Edith Wharton, "Knobb’s Complete Opera Book", a larger-than-life commemorative photo book about Louis Vuitton, "Japan, A History in Art", "Early Christian and Byzantine Architecture", "Leonardo da Vinci – All Paintings". In all, there are more than 1,000 books in the villa’s libraries and sitting rooms, virtually all of them collectors’ pieces.

Contributing to the aura of refinement is a collection of art and antiques from around the world. Most valuable, possibly, is a painting acquired recently in an auction at London’s Christies: "Balshazzar’s Feast" by the Italian painter Andrea Vicentino Michieli. Candelabra from the sixteen hundreds flank this piece. In the adjacent library is a Florentine sideboard circa 1700, not to be outdone by a sideboard from France from the same period. An oil painting by Peter Casteels, dating to1600, graces the wall of a sitting room on another floor, and two English pieces – a hand-carved walnut and briarroot bureau from 1695 and a wardrobe of roughly the same age – sit against the walls in that room. Spain is represented by two stupendous mirrors with hand-painted borders, these among the newer pieces in the house, being only 125 years old.

Florentine painters spent over two years hand-painting all the walls and ceilings, using the colors that most probably would have graced its original walls – pale greens, violets, yellows; inspired faux designs have been applied in each room, all of which convey the loving attention to detail guests feel everywhere. The beds are hand-wrought iron, made for Terranova by a local artisan and, because of their grand size and weight, were assembled only when they reached the insides of their respective rooms. All the doors and some of the wardrobes and book shelves in the house are also hand-carved by local artisans.

Much of what guests are served by Chef Patrizio comes right from the Estate’s gardens; its own olive oil, a wide array of herbs and vegetables including squashes, lettuces, tomatoes, peppers, carrots; merlots and cabernets using the Estate’s own vineyards. The chef cooks in a hearty Umbrian/Mediterranean style, with lots of pastas, lamb, beef, fresh soups and cheeses – favorites are Tagliata di Manzo al Rosmariona e Racicchio Acciugato, and Sigari di Ricotta di Bufala e Spinaci, or for dessert Semifreddo alla Amerena con Pistacchi Tostati. Of course, with the astounding views, most of the summer dining is outside – either on the lawn or terraces. But the restored, vaulted-ceiling dining room, lit entirely by candles made especially for the house, could not be more romantic. Then there is the owner’s wine cellar, with grand, candled chandeliers.

Guest’s activities can be as strenuous or as relaxed as you like, laze the day away by the pool, visit the Chef for a master class in the art of risotto or home-made pasta or just curl up on the sofa in one of our two sitting rooms or in the inglenook fireplace in our bar, the strains of Verdi floating through the house, and relax with one of our many books to be found on our bookshelves or stacked on tables throughout the house. The hotel sits at 500 metres above sea level, so each sunrise and sunset are spectacular when viewed from the front terrace. The restaurant at Palazzo Terranova is open for guests for lunch and dinner. The chef prepares new and traditional dishes using the freshest, local ingredients.

Perhaps one guest, writing in Terranova’s guest book, had it right when she said: "It is a delight to stay in a home that is both grand and intimate, and in which one’s loftier senses are simultaneously relaxed and excited. Truly, this is a place where nature and civilization meet."
