Town Hall Hotel & Apartments
5 Star*****
8 Patriot Square, Bethnal Green
London E2 9NF

An imposing Town Hall has stood in the heart of London’s vibrant East End since Edwardian times: grand, but with a refined elegance that lasts the centuries. Times changed. Although its halls, marble staircases and beautifully modelled art-deco rooms appeared in films, the Town Hall itself was no longer in daily use. Its story seemed finished.

But where dust was settling, craftsmen have been repairing fine plasterwork, polishing marble and wood panels. Architects created a gleaming roof-annexe and metal veil, flooding the rooms with dappled light. Up and coming young artists have installed newly commissioned works; the spacious apartments are arranged with one-off vintage furniture and designer kitchens. In the state of the art restaurant, the Head Chef puts the finishing touches to his mouth-watering menu and the barman polishes martini glasses. The art-deco modelled meeting rooms bustle as delegates arrive, while in the classical Council Chamber, a bride is checking the seating plan for her special day. This is Town Hall Hotel Apartments. Join our story.

Only fifteen minutes walk to London’s financial district and well-connected to the city and the West end by tube, train and road, Bethnal Green has long been the powerhouse of London – a vibrant area where the working-class rubbed shoulders with waves of new immigrants, where successful entrepreneurs open offices next to artists’ studios and fine-dining restaurants stand alongside traditional pubs. It gives the area a special character and energy which make it one of the most exciting places in London to live. Famous today for its markets, trendy bars and as the heart of London’s artistic community, it has a myriad stories for you to discover, from the Museum of Childhood to the speciality restaurants of Brick Lane

Your private pied à terre in the city: inspired lighting hangs above bespoke tables, while one-off pieces of vintage furniture ensure each apartment or room has an individual sense of style, from a quirky brilliance to timeless elegance. Each room or apartment is unique, but whether you’re in a contemporary, under-the-eaves loft space flooded with patterned light from the ornamental metal veil, or in a high-ceilinged traditional room with dark fumed oak and classic grey stone, you know that each detail has been attended to for a five-star finish. From the Egyptian-cotton sheets to the daily maid service, your comfort is our top priority.

A delight to relax in, but easily long enough for a satisfying swim, the pool area was designed in shades of white marble with touches of brass to recall the elegance and charm of a traditional spa. Natural light falls from the roof and catches the reflective tiles which line the pool, turning the water a shimmering green, blue and copper as the day progresses.

If you’re looking to let off some steam after a long day’s work, our fitness centre has everything you need. Conveniently situated in the basement of the hotel, but naturally lit by a large skylight, we have a full range of equipment in a glass-walled gym that overlooks the 15 metre swimming pool. Showers and changing facilities are provided for both men and women.

Pool and fitness centre are open from 7am to 10pm for the use of guests, but are not supervised. Please call reception if you need help with any of the equipment.

Viajante Restaurant

Some people are born with a restless passion for adventure – they are the wanderers, the ‘viajantes’. Nuno Mendes, Head Chef, has been a pioneer explorer in gastronomy, wandering the globe in a passionate quest for the most delicious flavours, the finest ingredients, the most innovative techniques. Training and working in many of the world’s finest kitchens, Nuno’s passion for good food and his creative genius have found expression in running his own restaurants in London. These projects have garnered lavish accolades from the most jaded of reviewers and introduced diners to his magical blend of authentic ingredients and perfectly executed cooking.

Viajante takes the path less travelled. Its tasting menus combine the simple with the extravagant – radishes grown in a local garden pique the appetite for iberico pork belly crumbed on scallops in mushroom veloute, a beetroot sorbet clears the palette for melt-in-the-mouth beef from a smallholding in North Wales. Designed by Rare architects, with bespoke, hand-made furniture, every table creates an intimate, private world for diners to enjoy this special food.

A mecca for foodies and the perfect place for those celebrating a special occasion, Viajante’s success rests on word-of-mouth recommendations as much as the acclamation of food critics. Nuno’s dishes open a new vista in cuisine – delicious, exciting, unforgettable. To go on a journey with Viajante is to find a restaurant you’ll want to return to again and again.

With its stunning design, soft lighting and a high-quality wine and cocktail list, Town Hall bar attracts an eclectic crowd, from guests enjoying a pre-dinner drink to people coming home from the City who appreciate Town Hall’s sophisticated but relaxed atmosphere
